That focus on the customer is especially welcome on the wine list, where the house white (£39) – a streamlined Chenin Blanc stunner produced exclusively for Atherton’s restaurants – is enthusiastically pushed by group head sommelier Laure Patry. Like many members of key staff, she has been with Atherton since the Maze days. And, like them, she provides the Social security that Atherton’s expansion is in the hands of a team committed to maintaining the standards that Pollen Street set so high.
It’s brunch, but not as we know it. It’s pure theatre. ‘Toast’ is a square of brioche under a slab of rich quail terrine. Then they open a big wooden box and – ta-da – reveal the pine-smoked quail inside, which goes on top of the ‘cereal’, along with a breaded, deep-fried quail’s egg, which actually is… an egg.
The empire-building started here in a small road south of Oxford Street that’s easy to miss. There’s an evident eye for the theatre of restaurant dining… with an open kitchen, a bar area with its own grazing menu and cocktail list, and the now famous dessert bar. There are plenty of modern techniques used in Atherton’s cooking, bags of contemporary ideas, and clever twists and turns along the way. This is exciting stuff.
For birthdays or business, romance or carousing, “flawless” Pollen Street Social is “the perfect restaurant” – whether you’re wearing jeans or a suit. It really is ‘social’ too, so start with a cocktail in the “ever-so-cool” bar, a taster of the invention and attention to detail to come… Peerless staff receive universal praise for their sterling efforts (“no compromise on professionalism here”), and the wine list from group sommelier Laure Patry continues to enthral.
“Is Michelin-starred dining supposed to be this much fun?” quips one fan.
